Iowa Workforce Development Reports Initial Unemployment Insurance Claims Filed for Week of March 22-28, 2020

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 2, 2020) — The number of initial claims in Iowa reported by the US Department of Labor, filed between Sunday, March 22, and Saturday, March 28 (a time period that reflects the increased number of claims filed related to COVID-19, including the broader group of individuals eligible for claims due to the virus) was 58,453. There were 55,963 initial claims by individuals who work and live in Iowa, and 2,490 claims by individuals who work in Iowa and live out of state.

The number of continuing weekly unemployment claims as a result of COVID-19 will be available in next Thursday's release.

Gov Kim Reynolds Announces Unemployment Insurance Tax Extension to Assist Small Businesses

DES MOINES, IOWA (March 24, 2020) — On March 23, Governor Kim Reynolds announced that first quarter unemployment tax payments that are due April 30 will be delayed till the end of the second quarter, July 31, 2020. Eligible employers include those employers with 50 or fewer employees. Eligible employers also must be in good standing with no delinquencies in quarterly payments.

Iowa's Unemployment Rate Remains at 2.8 Percent in January

Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remains unchanged from the revised December rate of 2.8 percent. The state’s jobless rate was 2.7 percent one year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate increased slightly to 3.6 percent in January.

Iowans' Unemployment and Injury Benefits Increase

DES MOINES, IOWA (June 28, 2019) — Iowa Workforce Development announced an increase to maximum weekly benefits paid to unemployed Iowans and to workers injured on the job. The new benefit payment schedules apply to people who file new unemployment insurance claims on or after July 7, 2019, and to workers injured on or after July 1, 2019.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 13, 2019) — On May 10, 2019, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared individuals in Scott county eligible for individual assistance. FEMA determined that this county was adversely affected by the event declared a major disaster by the President in his Declaration of March 23, 2019.
